Milan, 10 November 2021 - Switching from fossil fuels to low carbon hydrogen is one of the most strategic goals to launch the global industry on its way to net zero targets. In this scenario, Equinor’s Hydrogen to Humber Saltend (H2H Saltend) project to be developed in the Humber region in the United Kingdom is set to play a leading role in the UK’s journey in industrializing the energy transition. Equinor is the UK’s leading energy provider, supplying natural gas, oil and electricity, and aims to reach net zero emissions globally by 2050. 

As the H2H Saltend initiative is progressing, a consortium composed by Tecnimont and KBRhas been awarded a PRE-FEEDcontract with other competing Consortia to provide design proposals, as well as a lump sum front end engineering design and option for engineering, procurement and construction execution and operations for the 600 megawatt H2H Saltend low carbon hydrogen production plant, one of the world’s first at-scale facilities to produce hydrogen from natural gas in combination with carbon capture and storage. The plant will be located in the Saltend Chemicals Park, to the east of Hull. The consortia have been chosen through a 6-month prequalification process. At the end of 2022 the plan is to select one of the consortia to move into the final stage of engineering (FEED) in preparation for a Final Investment decision in later 2023.

According to Equinor’s projections, H2H Saltend project will enable fuel switching in 2026-2027 resulting in a CO2 emissions reduction of 1.1 million tonnes a year.
